COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Patience is a virtue in hockey, too. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots and flu-weakened James Wisniewski had a goal and two assists to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-1 victory over the struggling New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. Nothing much happened in the first 26 minutes of play, but the Blue Jackets adhered to their game plan and in the end it paid huge dividends. "We kind of just stuck with it," said Cam Atkinson, who scored an unassisted goal for what proved to be the winner. "Theyre a trap team so whoever broke down first, the other teams going to capitalize. A big power-play goal by Dubie kind of got the ball rolling for us." Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist and Marian Gaborik added an empty-netter for the Blue Jackets, who won for the second time at home after losing four games in a row. They are 13-3-3 in their last 19 home games. "We played a smart, systematic game -- thats what the Devils do," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "It was a little bit of a chess match going back and forth. I like the way we managed the puck and managed our shifts. There just wasnt a lot going on and you have to be comfortable playing that game. Patience is a good way to describe it." Leading 2-1, the Blue Jackets made it a two-goal lead at 4:12 of the third. The Devils had a bad turnover in their defensive zone, with Wisniewski stepping across the blue line and almost pushing the puck toward the net. The puck hit the stick of defenceman Mark Fayne and went through to goalie Corey Schneider before tumbling over the goal line. That was more than enough of a cushion for Bobrovsky, last years Vezina Trophy winner as the NHLs top goalie. He came in with just two wins despite a .921 save percentage while starting the first seven games. He made several solid saves in the second period, in particular, but wasnt tested much in the third. "Obviously, Bob was a rock for us tonight," Atkinson said. The loss dropped the Devils to 0-5-2 on the road and 1-5-3 on the season. They had finally picked up their first win with a 4-0 victory on Saturday that ended a club-record, season-opening seven-game winless streak. "We definitely wanted to build off that win. We started that way with the power-play goal (by Michael Ryder), but we didnt do it," captain Bryce Salvador said. Asked what the teams problem was on the road, Salvador said, "I dont know. If we knew, wed definitely address it and fix it." Coach Peter DeBoer was left to explain another defeat. "We turned the puck over in our own zone a couple of times and they banged it in," he said. "Were all searching for answers. The bottom line is, when you go on the road and play these teams -- and thats a big strong team -- you have to have 20 guys prepared to be in the fight and win battles. You cant go in with 15 or 16." The Devils led 1-0 after Ryders power-play goal in the second period, but Dubinsky responded with a man-advantage goal of his own. Atkinson and Wisniewski, who didnt come out for the morning skate he was so sick, each added unassisted goals. "I woke up at 6 a.m. and (was really sick)," Wisniewski said. "We showed a lot of character in the way we played. It took us a while to get going, but we found a way to win." The Blue Jackets took a 2-1 lead at 15:30 of the second when Atkinson skated toward the high slot. His quick backhander made it through heavy traffic for his third of the season. After Wisniewskis goal, Gaborik scored his fourth on an empty net with 35 seconds left in the game. The Blue Jackets are a different team from when they couldnt gain a point on the road a week ago. "The big word for me is urgency," Dubinsky said. "Were a lot more urgent in our game. Were putting long stretches of (good) time together. If you look through those losses, we had stretches where we were playing good but just not for long enough. Over the last couple of games, weve just dug deep and played complete games." Edmonton opened the season with 14 straight victories before falling Friday night 10-8 to the host Colorado Mammoth in National Lacrosse League action. http://www.authenticnyrangerspro.com/ . Spencer Abbott and Trevor Smith scored third-period goals erasing a 2-1 deficit giving Toronto a late 3-2 lead. Mark Messier Jersey . It was considered unlikely that Rielly would be loaned to Canada for the tournament, which begins Dec. 26 in Malmo, Sweden, though a stretch of three straight games in the press box made it something of a debate. Martin St. Louis Jersey . Halak did not get the start in the Washington Capitals Tuesday night game against the St.Hes the other Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick at the World Junior Hockey Championship, yet Russian defenceman Rinat Valiev isnt getting much love – or notice – from the Air Canada Centre crowd. He appears to be fine with all the attention on William Nylander. The Maple Leafs second pick last June (3rd round, 68th overall from Kootenay Ice) is just thrilled to be playing at this event in a place he hopes will be his NHL home one day. It means a lot for me, said Valiev, following Russias 3-2 loss to Sweden on Monday. I like it here. Its a huge dream. Im so excited to play here. Valiev left his Russian home of Nizhnekamsk (1,000 kilometers east of Moscow) when he was 17, to play in the United States Hockey League with the Indiana Ice. He has spent the last two seasons with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. He was hampered by a knee injury last season and has shown he is fully healed now. Before he joined the Russian team, he led the Ice defencemen in scoring (5G, 20A in 23 games). His strong play in the playoffs last season for Kootenay (1G, 8A in 13 games) left an impression with the Leafs. After he went undrafted in 2013, the Leafs made him their next choice after Nylander last June. He was exceptional (in the playoffs) especially in the first round when they upset Calgary, said Leafs scouting director Dave Morrison at the draft. We really liked him all along and then we saw that. This is a guy with a big heart and all the intangibles we look for in a player. To see Rinat on the ice in the last few seconds of a game (as he was in the ggame against Sweden), killing penalties at key times, we couldnt be happier, said Steve Staios, the Leafs Player Development Advisor, following the game against Sweden.dddddddddddd Hes a terrific kid, added Staios a veteran of 1,001 NHL games. He wants to be a player. Theres a lot of upside. I like the way he moves on the ice. Hes a good first passer. Fundamentally, hes sound. The 6-foot-2, 208 pound Valiev signed an entry level deal with Toronto in July. While Staios doesnt like to make comparisons, Valievs play reminds some of another former Leaf blueliner, Dmitri Yushkevich. Hes in a good place in Kootenay, said Staios. They rely on him heavily. Its been a steady progression for him. The 19 year-old Valiev is quick to credit Staios for helping him out prior to the season. Staios spent a few days with Valiev and worked with him on the ice. Steve Staios is helping me a lot, smiled Valiev. He came to Kootenay and he showed me a lot of things; skating movement, shooting the puck, stuff like that. Valiev is excited at the prospects of facing Ice teammate Sam Reinhart – hopefully in the final – at this event. During the game against Sweden, the Air Canada Centre crowd cheered loudly during a highlight montage of William Nylander (Torontos first round pick last June). Valiev didnt notice. I didnt really hear that. I was trying to focus on the game. Hes a good player (Nylander had two assists in the game) and before the game, coach told us to play hard against him, I know that. Maybe one day, Valiev will get his due in Toronto.
